Training to be an outlier: the 10,000 hour barrier

Professor Peter Laussen is Chief of The Cardiovascular Intensive Care at The ChildrenÕs Hospital of Boston and Professor in Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School. PeterÕs research interests include depth of anaesthesia during cardiac surgery; neurological outcome following cardiopulmonary bypass; mechanical support of the circulation and stress response following cardiac surgery. He has also lead his field in patient safety.

Appropriate integration of multiple safety systems is very important to provide the highest standards of care. Preventing failure to intervene is key to reducing adverse events. There is no substitution for experience and where that is not possible mentoring must be in place.
