Simon is a renowned British Mountaineer best known through the book Touching the Void. Simon describes his ascent of Siula Grande with Joe Simpson in 1985 in which Simpson broke his leg during the descent. Simon attempted to rescue Joe, however during terrible weather during the descent Simon had to cut JoeÕs support rope or both would have died. Simon is also the author of two books about mountaineering, the first Against the Wall and the second The Flame of Adventure.
The combination of many small mistakes can snowball out of control leading to a catastrophic event. Careful planning and experience means catastrophe is less likely to happen. In certain situations one has to do what one has to do in order to survive, even if this means "cutting the rope".
