Lessons for pre-hospital triage and “when to break protocol” during a major disaster

Dr Richard Smith FRCA, is as a Consultant Trauma Resuscitation Anaesthetist at the Royal Stoke University Hospital Major Trauma Centre. His pre-hospital roles include working as a regular HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Service) doctor for both The Air Ambulance Service and the North West Air Ambulance. He is a MERIT (Medical Emergency Response Incident Team) Doctor for the North West Ambulance Service, for which he has completed major incident training, and a volunteer responder for the Cheshire and Shropshire BASICS scheme. In this capacity he attended the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017 as a volunteer responder.
