Robert M. Wachter, MD is Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directs the 50-physician Division of Hospital Medicine. Author of 250 articles and 6 books, he coined the term ÒhospitalistÓ in 1996 and is generally considered the ÒfatherÓ of the hospitalist field, the fastest growing specialty in the history of modern medicine. In the safety and quality arenas, he edits the federal governmentÕs two leading websites on safety and has written two bestselling books on the subject, including Understanding Patient Safety. In 2004, he received the John M. Eisenberg Award, the nationÕs top honour in patient safety. In 2010, Modern Healthcare magazine named him the 10th most influential physician-executive in the U.S. and one of the 100 most powerful people in healthcare.
