Sharing ideas on Risk, Human Performance, Teams and Leaders

Our first conference was held back in 2006 and now is one of the most widely recognised conference in the world.

In the early 2000s the cardiac team at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) initiated an improvement project aimed at making it safer to transfer patients from operating theatres to the ICU, a highly complex procedure. This involved the teams learning from both the McLaren and Ferrari Formula 1 teams. A subsequent study showed the beneficial effect of the project and the GOSH team were excited and motivated by the sharing of ideas with other industries. The study was featured in the Wall Street Journal in 2006.

In 2005 a team came together to organise conferences with the aim being to allow professionals from a variety of industries, including high risk industries, to share and exchange their ideas and concepts about risk, human performance, teamwork and leadership.

The first conference took place in 2006 jointly hosted by GOSH and The Royal College of surgeons. The conference focussed on defining moments in safety critical industries including NASA, civil aviation, offshore oil and gas, nuclear and Formula 1 industries. It was an outstanding success and developed a demand for similar conferences to be held internationally. Risky business conferences have now taken place in the UK, Canada, USA and South Africa.

The vision is to develop conferences globally to encourage the sharing of ideas around risk across a variety of industries by taking an innovative approach to:

  • Sharing new ideas and concepts about managing risk, culture, systems and human performance
  • Understanding why and when human error occurs and how to avoid, trap and mitigate the consequences
  • Sharing how different industries manage critical incidents
  • Understanding different concepts of leadership and teamwork
  • Learning how others deal with regulation, the law and managing the media while always supporting families
  • Integrating new innovations and technologies
